about

All of these songs appeared suddenly and very quickly; all except one in a six week period. Each was recorded immediately and in some cases it was less than two hours between the first idea and the finished product. Whilst I accept that they may sound rushed and sharp edged, it felt like the instancy was an important part of the songs.

This is the first time I’ve put my own name to a collection of songs rather than hide behind the names ‘the dolphin post’ and ‘School of the Arts’. This isn’t because the songs are intrinsically more personal - although some do feel it, but more that I feel this is the most natural group of songs I have recorded and am exposed in the arrangements. I’ve not tried to hide my voice in fx as I often do to hide its plain failings.

As with ‘the dolphin post’ I’ve intentionally limited the instrumentation around the songs to give a cohesive ‘band’ approach, but once again everything is played by me. Everything has been played on Variax and Fender electric / electronic guitars with all accordians, french horns and cellos coming through the Fender controlled Roland guitar synth.

Oh and Cwtch is not only a mistyped ‘catch’ - it’s also a Welsh word for a hug and was featured in the Guardian as one of the 10 nicest words of the English (sic!) language.

Track Name: Apart
Apart (of our day)

Capo 2nd fret
Verse: Dm Am (with some hammered Am7)
Chorus: Dm (with some overlaid Am’s)

Every day, we’re a part of our day
There’s so much we sing,
And so much we say
People they just can’t understand
How we can stand
Having to stand.. apart

Everyday we’re apart
A part of our day
Everyday we’re apart

Every day we’re a part of our day
There’s a vision I hold
That keeps the devil at bay
It stands and it waits just over there
Waiting to see
If we stumble and fall… apart

Everyday we’re apart
A part of our day
Everyday we’re apart

MIDDDLE 8 Vocal improvised harmonies

Instr

Every day we’re a part of our day
And the part that we have
Is more than the whole
And the hole that is left
Is only a hole
That will be filled … in parts

Everyday we’re apart
A part of our day
Everyday we’re apart
………A part of our day

Track Name: Cwtch
Instrumental - the title is a Welsh word and The Guardian included it in a list of the most beautiful words in the English language.... which seemed odd. But it IS a beautiful word.

They never know
Where to find that love
All around the world
And you’re just here
And you’re just here
Singing to me
Singing to me

Everywhere you go
you hear songs on the radio
Songs for the loved

Calendar’s pages turn
The weather stays the same
If I want to see the sun
I just call out your name
In the shade dreams are made
In the light there’s delight
And if the night should fade
There’s another light

All my life I wondered
Was there more than this
Then you came into that life
And you answered yes
In the shade dreams are made
In the light there’s delight
And if the night should fade
There’s another light

middle 8
Dreams last
Never fail
Bright colours
Never pale

Calendar’s pages turn
It soon comes to years
Everyday brings it’s own
Reasons to want more
In the shade dreams are made
In the light there’s delight
And if the night should fade
There’s another light

I just wish
I just wish I’d known you
So long ago
Way back when
It seemed that the world
Turned so slow
And every step
We took brought us to
Where we are

I just wish
I just wish I’d held you
So long ago
Even though
We may not have been
Who we are
We would find
That we would grow to be
Just the same

and we have this day and the next
yes we have this day and the next
and we have this day and the next

Days can pass
Days can pass and feel
The clocks have failed
Or we can
Or we can live in the
Here and now
Here and now
Nothing matters more
Than here and now

Chorus
and we have this day and the next
yes we have this day and the next
and we have this day and the next

Break

Chorus
and we have this day and the next
yes we have this day and the next
and we have this day and the next

Sometimes it feels like
This day will never end
But that’s a good thing
…that’s a good thing

Sometime I feel like
The aching will never leave
But that’s such a good thing
… that’s such a good thing

Sometimes it feels like
There’s a long road up ahead
But that’s a good thing
… that’s a good thing

The day you came into my life
The day you came into my life
The day you came into my life
That was a good day

We have a good thing
We have a good thing

Sometimes it feels like
I’ve used up all my life
But that’s a good thing
… that’s a good thing

Sometimes it feels like
This day will never end
But that’s a good thing
…that’s a good thing

The day you came into my life
The day you came into my life

Track Name: You Came, You Saw, You Stayed
You Came, You Saw, You Stayed

Capo 3rd fret DADGAD
VERSE: C Fmaj7 shapes
CHORUS: Gmaj7 F maj7 shapes

There’s a bird
I can hear but not see
And it’s singing
As if for you and for me
And I wonder
How it could possibly know
That the song is ours to sing

CHORUS:
All the day
And all of the night
In the dark
The brightest of light
The sweetest song
I ever have heard
You came, you saw, you stayed

There’s a sun rise
We can both plainly see
But it’s rising
As if for you and for me
And I wonder
How it could possibly know
That the warmth is ours to feel

CHORUS:
All the day
And all of the night
In the dark
The brightest of light
The warmest light
I ever have felt
You came, you saw, you stayed

There’s are footsteps
I can hear and not see
And they’re bringing
You closer to me
And I wonder
If you could possibly know
How much I love that sound

CHORUS:
All the day
And all of the night
In the dark
The brightest of light
The soundest steps
I ever have heard
You came, you saw, you stayed
Track Name: I've Been Talking in Your Sleep
I’ve been talking in your sleep

Capo 3rd fret
Em verses, Am7 chorus

I’ve been talking in your sleep
And you never heard a word
The words you’d want to keep
But the words were never heard

It doesn’t matter
It really doesn’t matter
It doesn’t matter
It really doesn’t matter
because you know

I’ve been watching as you breathe
Watched the rising and the fall
Knowing that underneath
Year heart will hear my call

It doesn’t matter
It really doesn’t matter
It doesn’t matter
It really doesn’t matter
because you know

I’ve been sharing in your dreams
Dreaming of the days to come
Everything is what it seems
And we star in every one

It doesn’t matter
It really doesn’t matter
It doesn’t matter
It really doesn’t matter
because you know
Track Name: All I Dream
All I Dream
Capo 2nd fret
Em Am…
chorus D Am
Middle 8 F#m Em

Do we know
If we know
What we know and
What will come?
Can we see
If we see
What’s there to see
What will come?

In my heart
I have my dreams
And I’ll dream
All my dreams

Other worlds
Other lives
And do they know
What will come?
It’s not a rope
It’s just a hope
I hold on to
What might come?

In my heart
I have my dreams
And I’ll dream
All my dreams

Middle 8
Dreaming of sunnier climes
Dreaming of happier times
Dreaming the winter of hopes
Dreams that spring into life

Shall we see
What we can see
Who can see
What will come?
It’s OK
I’m OK
I’m happy with
Whatever comes?

In my heart
I have my dreams
And I’ll dream
All my dreams
Track Name: Good Luck (Doesn't Have a Conscience)
Good Luck

CAPO 2nd Fret
Each verse
Am7 G x3
Cmaj7 G

Good Luck doesn’t have a conscience
It doesn’t matter what you deserve
You don’t know what comes round the corner
Open armed or ready to swerve

It’s fine, oh Lord it is fine
Whether by choice or design
You can’t make the luck that you have
Take a chance and don’t cross the line

Good Luck has a sense of humour
Often at our expence
You walk in expecting a million
Walking out with only fifty pence

It’s hard oh lord it is hard
Whether by choice or design
You can’t make the luck that you have
Take a chance and don’t cross the line
Track Name: Closer by the Minute
Closer by the Minute

Capo 3rd fret
12 Bar. Em Am Bm

They say a single step
Becomes a thousand miles
Well every single thought I have of you
Becomes a thousand smiles

Closer by the minute
But you’ve never ever felt that far away

If I could draw a map
Every turning would be right
Well every step I take to you
The burden is so light

Closer by the minute
But you’ve never ever felt that far away

INST

If we did it by the book
We’d go from A to B
Well we never took the time to look
and started with a D

Closer by the minute
But you’ve never ever felt that far away

The clock it rules our life
We watch it out of fear
The days they pass so quickly
Ours will son be her

Closer by the minute
But you’ve never ever felt that far away
